Abstract:
Conservation District boundaries were based on the 1:100,000 scale TIGER county coverage. Information came from the Conservation Districts Bureau, The Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC), and the U.S. Soil Conservation Service (SCS). There are two kinds of regions in this layer. Montana Association of Conservation Districts (MACD) areas are delineated in the Polygon Attribute Table, U.S. Soil Conservation Service (SCS) district boundaries are identified in the Arc Attribute Table. The Soil Conservation Service is now called the Natural Resoruces Conservation Service.

Conservation districts are units of local government designed to help citizens conserve their soil, water, and other renewable natural resources. In 1937, President Roosevelt encouraged all states to adopt legislation enabling the creation of local soil conservation districts. The State Montana passed legislation creating its conservation districts in 1939 to provide for local control of natural resource management programs and activities.

The data were removed from the State Library's web site in 2008 when we were informed that these district boundaries were incorrect.

It seems that each polygon in this layer was supposed to represent a conservation district and that this layer assumed that each county corresponded exactly to a conservation district of the same name, except that Roosevelt County was split between two districts. But there have always been conservation districts that did not have the same name as the county and some of the districts in this layer must clearly be incorrect.

This seems to be the name of the county associated with a conservation district. It seems that each polygon in this layer was supposed to represent a conservation district and that this layer assumed that each county corresponded exactly to a conservation district of the same name, except that Roosevelt County was split between two districts.
